On this tour, we'll take you past many of those Must See places (Independence Hall, the Betsy Ross House, Christ Church and more), but we'll also show you *our* favorite places in the Old City neighborhood - an adorable coffee shop, charming back streets, early 1900's warehouses that have been converted into apartments, awesome restaurants and shopping, and lots more! We'll even treat you to a local treat along the way! While the main focus of this tour is Philadelphia's history, we will certainly share lots of our own favorite tidbits about Old City and you'll have plenty of time to ask questions at the end. - The tour will commence at the Independence Visitor's Center with an introduction to the topic of Black History during the colonial period. You will hear about the role that Black Americans played in the founding of the nation. The group will continue to the President’s House and hear about the 9 enslaved people who were held there. The group will hear about Martha Washington's handmaid who ran away to escape slavery. At the next stop you will see where The Fugitive Slave Act 1793 was passed. The next stop is Congo Square where people of African descent held celebrations. It is also a potter's field where free and enslaved Africans are still buried to this day. The next stop is Mother Bethel AME Church. There is where the African Methodist Episcopal Church was established and is the oldest piece of real estate owned by people of African descent in the United States. You will hear about the liberation of a woman whose owner attempted to abduct her back into slavery and the trial of her rescuers. You will also see the traditional sites of Independence Hall, liberty bell, Congress Hall, and much more Other things to note Masks are required. We will be walking approximately 1.5 miles for the tour on uneven and cobblestoned surfaces. Please wear comfortable and sturdy footwear.
