La Jolla Bay is a Marine Protected Area that is home to a thriving ecosystem that boasts a high concentration of sea life, has a natural boat launch, which allows safe ocean entry year-round, and is famous for its Sea Caves and Marine Reserve. No experience is required. Great for all skill levels. Your guide will kick things off with a paddle tutorial on the beach. If surf exists, we will help push your kayak through any breakers. As we paddle through La Jolla’s Marine Reserve keep an eye out for Seals, Sea Lions, Sea Turtles, Pelicans, Dolphin and Gray whales in the fall/winter. Note: We cannot guarantee sea life. If conditions are safe, we will help guide your kayak into Emerald Cave. If it's not safe to enter Emerald Cave, we will still paddle out & explore La Jolla's World-Famous Marine Reserve. This area is covered by the ocean half of the day- during high tide- and the pools are exposed at low tide, which creates a unique, yet fragile, habitat for lots of small invertebrates and fish! At our meeting spot, I will give you a brief talk on safety and tide pool rules, as all San Diego tide pools have a strict "no collection" policy. Once we understand how to tide pool safely and respectfully, the adventure begins! Kayak the beautiful La Jolla Ecological Reserve in a small group no larger than 6 with an experienced local naturalist. If you have a larger group you would like to take, that can also be accommodated. On the day of our adventure we will meet at the La Jolla Shores Boat Launching Area. I will wear bright clothing for easy visibility. From there we will walk about 5 minutes along the beach to our own launch location. Our tour will include all gear (life jackets, paddles, kayaks) and small water boxes for your personal items. You can take these boxes with you while on the tour. After a brief introduction we'll immediately depart on our tour. YOU WILL GET WET! But that's half the fun, so make sure to wear appropriate clothing. Our tour takes you on a beautiful journey through the La Jolla Ecological Reserve Underwater Park, a Marine Protected Area. We will visit and see multiple habitats to include the rocky shoreline, ocean and cave systems adjacent to La Jolla Cove. Along our travels we will likely see leopard sharks, rays, California sea lions, multiple species of sea birds, Garibaldi (the state salt water fish of California), green sea turtles and more. As we approach the Cove we can experience the famous Seven Caves of La Jolla. Depending on weather conditions we may be able to enter one of them. Contact me with any questions, including scheduling. We can continue walking along the beach and finish at Caroline's Seaside Cafe, a wonderful place for a few more photos. I will offer helpful tips for posing to get the best results. We will be snorkeling in Mission Bay, a calm, flat body of water that feeds into the Pacific Ocean. Being in the bay, we typically encounter small fish, interesting algae, and lots of invertebrates, including sea slugs, octopus, urchins, and sea stars! After a brief safety and snorkel etiquette talk, we will explore the area for one hour. I will point out and provide detailed information on the flora and fauna we encounter during the experience! *If you are a non-swimmer, feel free to book a private tour and/or message me to see if this is the right experience for you. Sometimes guests can be overwhelmed by the water, but this is the perfect place to learn! Update: We have been OPEN and SAFE since May, 2020 The La Jolla Ecological Reserve is the premiere kayak and snorkeling spot on California’s coast. To fully interact with all the amazing sea life in the area, our kayak and snorkel tour is a great option. The coolest part bout this experience is you get to see what's above and below the water! We kayak over by Sunny Jim's cave, where your guide will anchor the kayaks together. While snorkeling we see sea lions, seals, bat rays, Garibaldi (Nemo's Cousin), and sometimes sea turtles. Note: we cannot guarantee what sea life or any sea life we will encounter. La Jolla Bay is the premier snorkeling spot along Southern California's coast, but there are days that the visibility might only be 5 feet or can be as good as 50 feet. This tour is 2 hours and typically we snorkel for 20-30 minutes, max. Being able to swim is advised. If conditions are not safe enough to anchor the kayaks at Sunny's Jim's cave we will instead snorkel the kelp forest. Note: We DO NOT kayak or snorkel inside any of any caves on this tour. After a brief safety and snorkel etiquette talk, we will explore the area, including the caves (if conditions permit), for one hour. Since La Jolla Cove is part of a Marine Protected Area all natural things (animals, shells, etc.) must remain where they are found. I will point out and provide detailed information on the flora and fauna we encounter during the experience! Join me on a journey through one of San Diego's most iconic places! Since this park is large, we will be touring the major sites with the wind in our hair on electric scooters. No walking required ;) We will start by going over the basic operation of the scooters & getting comfortable riding in a quiet area of the park. From there, we will start our adventure! I will guide you through each section of Balboa sharing my unique knowledge of the park, stopping for photos along the way. The first stop will be the botanical building & lily pond where we will pause for some pictures. Next, we will briefly cruise to the entrance to the San Diego Zoo before heading to the Spanish Village Arts Center. We will then scoot to the Morton Bay Fig Tree. It's then time to ride down the iconic El Prado passing fountains & museums along the way. After a quick stop, we will head past the International cottages on our way to the air & space museum. We will wrap up at the Spreckels Organ Pavilion before heading back to where we started. If you want to see Balboa park in a unique way with a local guide, then this is the tour for you! For Special Consideration: The group will meet in Old Town San Diego at Rockin' Baja Lobster, a notoriously fun Mexican restaurant! We'll sip our first tequila shot while enjoying chips and a full salsa bar! *Fri, Sat, & Sun 6pm groups meet in Old Town San Diego at Casa de Maria, in the heart of the market-square and birthplace of California. The tour then takes us on a beautiful scenic walk. Guests' are encouraged to stop at some of the many store's to purchase souvenirs along the way. Our next stop is high on the hillside, Old Town Tequila Factory, where we sample another shot of tequila AND enjoy a delicious fish taco on the rooftop patio with a beautiful scenic view that overlooks Downtown San Diego and the San Diego Harbor that gives that perfect backdrop for a selfie! As the tour continues, we learn about the Whaley House, early California, grave sites, historical markers, and other Old Town facts as we pass them by on our way to our final stop. Saving the best for last, the restaurant, bar and tequila museum El Agave. This is a top shelf tequileria and carries over 2,000 tequilas.
