Sightseeing

Just 30km/19mi away from Viareggio, Pisa can easily be reached either via bus or train. While it's well known mostly for its Leaning Tower (la Torre Pendente), the rest of Piazza del Duomo is home to the Battistero and il Duomo di Pisa, both great places to visit. Relatively close is another must see place, Knights' square (Piazza dei Cavalieri), where one of Pisa's oldest universities is located. Another must see are the Lungarni, the Arno river promenades, which cross most of Pisa. The one that crosses the most places of interest if the Lungarno mediceo, where you'll be able to see Medici palace (Palazzo dei Medici), Toscanelli palace (Palazzo Toscanelli) and St. Matthew's Church (Chiesa di San Matteo). Pisa is often filled with tourists and college students, the latter thanks to the University of Pisa, a major Italian university.

A great park to visit during the day, it's shaded, tranquil and remains cool no matter how warm the day may be. There are plenty of mini game parks for kids to take part in.

Trains and buses are both cheap and readily available.

The train station of Viareggio is just 700m away from the apartment, while bus stations abound the major one is in Piazza D'Azeglio, and a main one is right in front of the train station. You can buy train tickets in the station (but careful to plan around possible queues etc.) or via app (the one we recommend is Trenitalia Orari/Train timetable, which lets you search trains and buy tickets up to 10 minutes before departure). Bus tickets can be bought in the train station at the newsstand, in the Piazza D'Azeglio bus office or on the bus as you board (costs a bit more).

You can buy daily, weekly, and monthly parking passes.

Parking passes can be bought in Tabaccherie (they have a sign with a blue background and a big "T" in white), the closest one you can buy a pass from is in Piazza Mazzini. From the apartment, you can reach it by turning left as you exit, towards the traffic lights, when you reach them turn left again and after 20m/65ft you'll see it. The Edicola in front of the building also sells day passes, and you can buy hourly passes from dedicated vending machines, where you'll have to insert your car's license plate first.
