Bickel Knob Observation Tower is a mountain summit located east of Elkins here in Randolph County, and is home to one of the few remaining observation towers in the Monongahela National Forest used as a watch post for forest fires. In the past, there was a small cabin located on Bickel Knob, and forest rangers would take shifts watching for any fires. Bickel Knob is about a 45-minute drive from our cabin, but less than a mile from the cabin as the crow flies. It’s a wonderful drive, and to get to the top of the lookout tower, you must climb a few flights of stairs. The lookout tower offers panoramic views of the area that are breathtaking. https://www.summitpost.org/bickle-knob/362023

Bear Heaven is a large natural formation of rocks located near Bickel Knob, 45 minutes from the cabin. You can hike, climb, and explore these rock formations for a great way to spend an afternoon. Bear Heaven lies on a ridge high on Shavers Mountain near Bowden, WV. The site figures a lot of different boulders and climbing areas that are open to exploration. Some rocks are covered with lichens, so one should be careful not to disturb the local environment. There a few spots to set up top-rope, but typically good anchors are scarce, so bring some long slings or webbing. There are many boulder problems waiting to be named. Campsites are available for a small fee. From Elkins, go east on State Highway 33 for approximately 11 miles, turn left on Forest Road 91 at the top of Shaver's mountain. Follow Forest Road 91 for approximately 3 miles. Bear Heaven Campground will be on the left.

Green Bank Observatory is located in the National Radio Quiet Zone, a 13,000 square mile region of minimized radio signal interference designated by the US Government in 1958 to create a safe haven for radio astronomy. The mountains surrounding it naturally block terrestrial signals and it has always fascinated me. It is almost an hour drive from the cabin, and is another great way to spend an afternoon. Green Bank Observatory offers a science center, a café, and plenty of sidewalks so you can take strolls beside the large outdoor antennas. Originally created by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in 1958 to protect the radio telescopes in Green Bank and Sugar Grove, the United States National Radio Quiet Zone has become a safe haven for many who suffer from electromagnetic hypersensitivity. It includes 13,000 square miles that spans West Virginia, Virginia, and a small part of Maryland. Due to the sensitivity of the telescopes, wireless technology is banned within the zone, and radio, cellular, and other broadcast transmissions are restricted to certain frequencies. The few permitted transmitters operate at reduced power using highly directional antennas. This makes it an ideal refuge for many severe EHS sufferers who find themselves able to live more of a normal life inside the Quiet Zone. https://greenbankobservatory.org/ 155 Observatory Rd, Green Bank, WV 24944 tel (304) 456-2150
