We are very lucky to be located in the middle of two great beaches. Trou aux Biches beach to your left and Mont Choisy to your right. Both beaches are just over 5 min walk away.
Mon Choisy Beach
This is our favourite beach! It has plenty of parking if you want to bring lots of beach gear with you. It has beautiful sand (especially half way down) and calm, clear water which is boat free. There is hardly any rock / coral / shell in the sand so you won’t need to wear beach shoes. The forest lining the beach provides shelter from the sun when you need it. There are loungers and parasols you can rent for the day. The beach is quite wide which means you will always find a quiet spot, even at weekends. Sundays are the busiest days at beaches in Mauritius with many locals enjoying their day off with family and friends, mainly in the shaded areas set back amongst the trees. This means the sunny, sandy spots are usually free!
Even though Mon Choisy beach is in a populous area, it is unique in that you will find hardly any hotels, bars or restaurants along its 2 km stretch. There are a handful of food vendors set back amongst the trees who can bring you hot / cold food including burgers, local cuisine, drinks and cocktails on request. There is usually an ice cream van around too. The food is usually of a high standard and they will hand out menus so you can take your pick!
Trou aux Biches Beach
Trou aux Biches also known as Le Sakoa is also a great beach with more of a resort feel. It is lined with hotels, bars, restaurants and snack vendors. Tourist operators are available offering a range of boat trips, game fishing and watersports.
Like Mont Choisy, it has lovely sand. The sandiest part of the seafloor is the north part of the beach, close to the entrance of the public beach, but further to the south (if you turn left) around the hotel Le Sakoa you will also find a great section beach with crystal clear waters. There are more boats moored here than Mont Choisy but still space to swim.
During peak season the beach gets very busy with tourists and locals. This is great if you want to be part of a lively, vibrant scene.
Parking is limited so we recommend you arrive early or enjoy a stroll to get there.
NB. Close to Troux aux biches you will find the local post office, police station, ATM, Bureax de change and other handy souvenir and convenience stores
Grand Baie Beach
Grand Baie beach is great for dining, shopping and organising tours. It is a nice stretch of sand not far from the main road, so a good spot to sit and enjoy some snacks from the vendors after a day shopping. Although you can swim here, there are other beaches better for swimming.
Shopping and Eating
Local Food and Amenities
We have a local roadside fruit seller in front of the apartment on the left and a very unconventional and slightly overpriced convenience store opposite the side entrance to the apartment.
7/10 is a small convenience store in Trou aux Biches ideal for your basics at a slightly cheaper rate than the store at your front door. 7/10 is located in front of Be Cosy Apart Hotel.
If you have a car or don’t mind getting a bus we would recommend shopping at the Super U hypermarket in Grand Baie. It is the best place to get all your food and household needs especially if you are staying for more than a few days. Super U is a 10-minute car ride, turning right out of Belle Haven or you can just hop on the Grand Baie Bus from the bus stop on the other side of the road. There is a taxi stand in the carpark just outside Super U.
If you want to make the best use of our BBQ, head to the fresh meat and fish section at Super U or to the fish Market in Grand Bay. The little market is located by the beach in the centre of town. Fishermen usually arrive to sell their catch of the day at 3:00-4:30pm. Many restaurants and even smaller hotels, come and buy from the fisherman so the fish can sell out fast!
Grand Baie is great for shopping. There are shops all the way along the coastal road (Royal Road) including Sunset Boulevard which has some high-end and boutique shops selling cashmere, jewellery and branded clothing. There is a large shopping precinct in the Super U complex, 5 min walk from the beach with plenty of parking. Here there is a casino, Super U hypermarket, liquor store, pharmacy, souvenir shops, KFC, McDonalds, Emtel mobile phone shop and Courts Department Store.
Just off the Royal Road is the main bazaar, also known as the Grand Bay market, offering many traditional Mauritian products and local handcrafts.
La Croisette Mall
La Croisette mall, is a 10-minute drive away. The mall offers a mix of 110 retail, dining, entertainment and leisure attractions. La Croisette is the biggest mall in the north and also has a multiplex cinema.
Just outside Belle Haven there is a great little restaurant and bar called Refresh. We loved the local cuisine and the prices were great too. They also do a lunch menu, if you just want to pop in for a quick bite during the day and the Pizzas are definitely recommended.
Opening hours are 11-3pm then 6pm till late
In Trou aux Biche a 3 min drive from the apartment. You have a nice outdoor bar/café with good local food called Souvenir. It’s located just across the road from Trou aux Bic;he car park on the junction. Again it’s good prices and good food.
If you are looking for something a bit more up market. Le Pescatore is a gorgeous seafood restaurant a 3 min walk, located on the seafront. Turn left on the main road and head towards Trou aux Biche, it’s across the road from Blue Water Diving Centre.
Restaurants in Grand Bay
There are plenty to choose from.
Café de la Plage
Apart from the major hotels, very few cafés and restaurants in Mauritius have beach front locations. Café de la Plage at Grand Baie Beach is an exception where you can enjoy a coffee or a tasty lunch right next to the water with a great view.
The Beach House
Our favourite place to go is called The Beach House Restaurant and Beach Bar located just after the National Coastguard Post at the traffic lights when driving from here to Grand Baie along the coastal road. They prefer reservations in the evenings as it can get busy but usually make an effort to accommodate tourists.
If like me, you enjoy football and want to see your favourite team, you can head to:
which is a great outdoor cocktail bar with multiple TV’s and a projector screen with well priced drinks. It’s located in Grand Baie at the main junction traffic lights, just where you turn right to go to Super U if travelling from here to Grand Baie. It has a giant Dodo outside, I would recommend parking at Super U and walking across to the bar or getting a taxi if you don’t have a designated driver. NB There is a zero tolerance alcohol law in Mauritius introduced Sept 2018. It is illegal to drive after having ANY amount of alcohol within 3 hours of driving or any detectable level of blood alcohol. There is a hefty fine and criminal charge for drink driving so if in doubt get a taxi!
Banana Beach Club
If you’d like to combine your drinks and football with a nice restaurant for the evening, I’d recommend heading to Banana Beach Club. Drinks are not cheap, but it’s a really cool bar and has live music in the evenings. They show multiple games at once, so if you’re not sure your game will be shown at B52s or on the main screen here, it will probably at least be on one of the smaller screens. Banana Beach Club do have their own parking area located towards the end of the beach furthest away from Grand Baie town, across the road. It’s next door to the petrol station.
