Northland's West Coast southern Hokianga is relaxed and chilled-out, and is just over an hour's drive to the East Coast tourist-mecca of the Bay of Islands if you wish to go there for the day - but there are LOADS of wonderful activities to do in this heart of Maori history, the extraordinary Hokianga ...

Swimming, surfing the water, surfing the sand-dunes, line-fishing, cray-fishing, deepsea-fishing, visiting NZ's largest mighty Kauri trees, a coffee on the iconic Rawene Boatshed deck, a beer on the iconic Opononi Tavern deck, a pinot gris on the century-old Omapere Heads Hotel deck, ferry to the Kohukohu art galleries, kayaking & jetskiing the Hoki, and UNTOLD walking/cycles/forest treks including the incredible Wairere Boulders. So much to do!

If you enjoy being near a lot to do, but also enjoy staying in a beautiful location where you can enjoy doing nothing, Onepu Moana Retreat is perrrrfect.

The Holiday House is fabulous layout for multiple couples and extended families. With two kitchens and two lounges (each with their own Netflix channel), and a large deck where you can find yourself mesmerized looking at the water, plus a spa-pool terrace with the most stunning outlook.
The property is also potentially well-suited to health & wellness retreats, and corporate getaways: The open-plan 30sqm Downstairs dining-lounge-kitchen can be an ideal "work space" and the Upstairs entertainer's kitchen and large deck being an ideal "socialize space".
Please don't book Onepu Moana if you are a bunch of singles planning to PARTY!

If you want a holiday house right on the beach, surrounded closely by lots of other holiday houses, then this is not the place for you.
But if you want a feeling of quality, privacy, and uninterrupted elevated clifftop views, in a location less than a mile to the local beach, then Onepu Moana ("sandy sea") could be perrrrfect.

If you love history and culture, we are right in the heart of Maori and European history in Aotearoa (New Zealand).
Looking out the kitchen windows is the conical hill of Whiria, location of the most famous Maori Pa (fortress) in the entire Hokianga.
From the upstairs kitchen window you can also see the Pakanae marae (meeting house) where the anchor-stone of Polynesian explorer Kupe's waka (canoe) is housed, from 1000 years ago.

Practically everyone that visits Opononi in the Hokianga comes away with the feeling that it is a very special place ... people fall in love with the Hoki - it feels good for the soul!

Hello!
We're Mark and Kathy Fray. Mark is a skilled carpenter-renovator and Kathy is a maternity writer (+ amateur interior designer).

We have the pleasure of being hosts to three completely different properties on AirBNB:

Firstly, ONEPU MOANA RETREAT our beautiful southern Hokianga 4-star silver Qualmark'd property (we are the only Qualmark rated holiday house in Opononi).
Facilities include six-bedrooms, two kitchen-dining-lounges, large deck with expansive uninterrupted views of the stunning Hokianga harbour, plus spapool terrace. It is an ideal location for extended families and groups of friends - or 5-6 guests wanting their own bedroom each.

Secondly, our OLD OWHANGO POST OFFICE LODGE in the National Park ward of the Ruapehu District. This iconic King Country building, has been beautifully renovated with opulent 1930s Art Deco decor. (It is currently going through the comprehensive Qualmark grading process.) It can be booked as the West Wing 1-4 bedroomed Holiday Home including Gatsby-style lounge, stunning kitchen and 4-poster Queen in the master bedroom, Drying room, Gun safe & Fire-pit. And its East Wing can be booked as 1-4 individual/altogether bedrooms with share kitchen-dining & share bathroom. Or the entire interconnecting 7-Bedroom Lodge can be booked for up to 18 guests.

Finally, our enormous WHARE KURA (The Old Aratapu School House) outside of Dargaville on the Kaipara's Kauri Coast. This property offers two Guest-Wings, able to accommodate from 1-15 guests in 1-5 bedrooms depending on what is needed. Yet to be renovated, this accommodation is "cheap & cheerful", roomy, and well equipped.

With every guest stay we, and our wonderfully dedicated local property managers, always do everything in our power to ensure guests have a wonderful stay, that ideally exceeds their expectations.
