Sightseeing

Seaham is one of the best seaside towns in the Northeast of England. FACT!! There are so many things to do, and it is a perfect place to visit for all ages. Also this beach is totally dog friendly. There are 6 main car parks. Terrace Green Car Park is the perfect place to park up and watch the waves roll in and if your lucky watch the sun set or rise. Seaham glass beach is the most popular and whilst you are there you can hunt for sea glass which is something the region is famous for. Over the years the glass has been smoothed and polished by the sea. At the other end of Seaham is Blast beach which is part of the Durham Heritage Coast. If you wanted to visit Seaham's secret beach you could visit Slope beach which is in the marina. Slope beach is the only sandy beach in Seaham, and popular with swimmers and beach goers. Walk along glass beach at the sand level which is flat and wheelchair accessible. You can also walk along the top which is pretty level all the way from Seaham Hall to Noses Point so perfect for wheelchairs and pushchairs.

You can park off the main road at the bottom of Penshaw Hill. From here there’s a network of paths which take in the whole site including Penshaw Wood. However, it’s hard to resist heading straight up the steps to the Monument. Standing on top of the hill, there’s a fantastic panorama of the North East. If it’s a clear day you might be able to see as far as the Cheviot Hills 50 miles away, or spot the spire of Durham Cathedral to the South. In Spring and Summer you’ll find a wonderful display of wild flowers which carpet the hill and quarry slopes. A delicate and colourful contrast to the imposing structure of the monument. Look out for a variety of insects and butterflies in this diverse grassland habitat. There’s also the old limestone quarry on the North side of the hill, which is a good place to spot birds feeding amongst the trees. The stepped shape of Penshaw Hill is attributed to local legend - the Lambton Worm. The giant monster is said to have wrapped itself around the hill ten times. Whether you come to marvel at this grand design, appreciate the wildlife or simply stop for a picnic and enjoy the view. Penshaw Hill is well worth a climb.

Crimdon is situated at the southern end of Durham’s Heritage Coast. Once a thriving holiday destination for mining families from nearby villages during the 1920’s, Crimdon is now a destination for one of our rarest seabirds, the Little Tern. The Little Tern visits Crimdon to breed each year from West Africa. They usually return to Africa with their young at the end of summer. The importance of these birds means they are well protected by wardens and volunteers, who are always available during the bird breeding season to talk to the public about the colony. Dog friendly. Quite a climb down to the beach but well worth it. A new café and rest room facilities are being built. Free parking. A little hidden gem.
