Abersoch Beach is probably the most popular beach in the area. Its sheltered position makes it ideal for bathers and watersports lovers alike, though there is no lifeguard cover. Its easterly aspect means it faces the mountains of west Wales and St Tudwal's Islands giving spectacular views. The beach is considered to be safe with no severe currents or rips in normal conditions. A motor boat exclusion zone provides a secure area for bathers. Speed restrictions are enforced near to the beach marked by a series of yellow buoys. International sailing events are held from this beach providing a wonderful spectacle. A large number of yachts are moored in the bay during the summer months. The beach is also popular with powerboat users and windsurfers. The prevailing south-westerly wind blows cross-shore here which is ideal for windsurfers. There are no waves for surfers to be found here, rough water conditions occur when the wind blows from an easterly quarter. Paddle around the harbour to the north and you get to Quarry Beach which is quieter with lovely safe swimming. You can take pleasure boat trips from Abersoch to St Tudwal's to see seals and bottlenose dolphins.

Hells Mouth Beach, or Porth Neigwl, attracts thousands of surfers every year, and is also a popular spot with families. It sits between the headlands of Mynydd Cilan and Mynydd Penarfynydd, close to the tip of the peninsula, with a lovely 4 mile stretch of unbroken shoreline. It lives up to its name when the surf is up, but in better weather, it's a perfect crescent of sand and clear blue sea that is perfect for a traditional day out at the beach. The beach is mainly sand, with some medium and large pebbles, backed by sand dunes and cliffs, making it a great place for a walk, or just to lay back and relax.Hell's Mouth rarely becomes crowded due to its size, although it does get pretty busy during the Wakeboard festival in July! You do need to be a strong swimmer to enjoy the water here, making it great for surfing, but not for inexperienced swimmers. Keep an eye out for Harbour porpoises and Bottlenose dolphins! There is a small car park that is free to use, but the nearest facilities can be found at Llanengan, or Abersoch, which is only 2.5 miles away.

At Harlech Beach the golden sands are four miles long and provide a truly superb spot for walking, beach combing, kite surfing and bathing, though there is no lifeguard cover. The sands are backed by a dune system that has been accreting so radically that Harlech Castle, almost a mile inland, was actually built right by the sea. See our listing for Harlech Castle for more information. On the northern side of the beach is the Morfa Harlech Nature Reserve, a haven for rare plant species and birdlife. On the southern end lies the promontory of Shell Island where more than 200 different types of shell have been found. Leatherback turtles are occasionally seen offshore hunting the jellyfish which are abundant in the bay, so do be careful of those when swimming.

Must see historical landmarks
Spectacularly sited Harlech Castle seems to grow naturally from the rock on which it is perched. Like an all seeing sentinel, it gazes out across land and sea, keeping a watchful eye over Snowdonia. Very grand and bound to perk up the kids' imaginations, especially when you tell them it only cost £8k new... That was a while ago though! The English monarch Edward I built Harlech in the late 13th century to fulfil this very role. It was one of the most formidable of his 'iron ring' of fortresses designed to contain the Welsh in their mountain fastness. There is a 200 foot long stairway which still leads from the castle down to the cliff base: a secret escape route! It's funny to think that this castle used to be connected by short channel to the sea, nowadays the water has receded a great distance away, leaving the fortress high and dry. Can the kids imagine the sea just moving away like that…?

Criccieth Castle, standing on its headland between 2 beaches, is a prominent North Wales landmark. It is also a landmark historic site, one of those rare castles with a foot firmly in both camps and a true testament to the varying fortunes of war. Criccieth's history is deeply entwined in the medieval conflict between Wales and England and there are plenty of stories about the place and how frequently it changed hands scattered amongst the information boards on site. The castle is very much a ruin so don't go along expecting grand halls and spiralling staircases, this is one that requires a bit of imagination from the kids! There are some award winning beaches nearby as well as more attractions for the family a little further afield, so why not make this one stop amongst many and fill your day with loveliness

A brute of a fortress. Caernarfon Castle's pumped-up appearance is unashamedly muscle-bound and intimidating. Picking a fight with this massive structure would have been a daunting prospect. By throwing his weight around in stone, King Edward I created what is surely one of the most impressive of Welsh Castles. Worthy of World Heritage status no less! Most castles are happy with round towers, not Caernarfon! Polygonal towers were the order of the day, with the Eagle Tower being the most impressive of these. You will also note the colour coded stones carefully arranged in bands.

For younger children, a shorter journey may be more appropriate. In just half an hour from Porthmadog or Blaenau Ffestiniog the train arrives at Tan Y Bwlch. Alight here for the nature trail to Llyn Mair picnic site. The Welsh Highland Railway is Snowdonia's newest railway. Trains start a spectacular 25-mile scenic journey from beneath the castle walls at Caernarfon. The trains, hauled by the world's most powerful narrow gauge steam locomotives, climb from sea level to over 650ft on the foothills of Snowdon, before zig-zagging dramatically down the steep hillside to reach Beddgelert, nestling in the heart of the National Park, then through the magnificent Aberglaslyn Pass and on to Porthmadog.

The view inside is just as lovely as out, as you come face to face with lambs and calves that you can bottle feed in the spring! Before you wander around the farm don’t forget to pick up your animal feed from reception to satisfy the hungry mouths of the goats, chickens and ducks you’ll meet along your way! Once all the feed is gone there’s lots more for children to enjoy, from a ride on the junior tractors, the indoor sandpit to air cannons and crazy golf! If you’re enjoying the fresh air why not keep walking along the nature trail and see what other native wildlife you can discover! A beautiful spot for nature and animals! Family campsite available Pay once and claim a free return visit!
The entry to Llanfair Slate Caverns, this old but significant and famous slate mine, is through the majestic main tunnel, under the spooky twin arches of the crypt, and into the lofty cathedral cavern! High adventure, only really low down! Remember that the tunnels and caverns you are about to see are all man made over a 100 years ago with only a candle for lighting so best for competently mobile kids not too shy about the dark! Descend Jacobs ladder and wonder through the tunnels and chambers, and look for the old drilling holes, and the likeness of a human face in the mighty no 6 cavern. It might be stating the obvious but if your children aren't keen o the dark, or being enclosed, this probably isn't a good idea. As you emerge from the caverns, you face the breathtaking view of Cardigan Bay, from the Preseli mountains in the south to the Lleyn peninsular. Look down at Shell Island and the Artro estuary, and at low tide trace the fourteen mile long natural causeway of St Patrick. Coaches welcome, special rates are available for parties. There's a children's farm park right next door and a picnic area is also available so why not make a day of it and do everything?!

Gog The Dragon must be lucky, he's got over 14,000 sq ft of play space, but he's willing to share it with your little beasties too! Whether they'll want to share it all they can't say, given that there is a 25ft drop slide to contend with! But that's ok, because there's a double 25ft drop slide too, meaning you can do it with them. Isn't that nice?! Aside from the frankly mental slide situation, all the usual adventure play excitement is here from ball pools and mini maze to swing balls and scramble nets, loads to entertain and exhaust even the hardiest kid. There is of course an under 4s' zone too, which features soft construction blocks, small slide and loads of bits and bobs for them to scramble around and climb on! On the top floor, there's Gog's Driving School where there's a fleet of varying vehicles ready for you to take a spin round the racetrack. Plus, there's a Laser Space Sport arena, where you can get some zero contact warfare action and zap at stuff with infra red equipment. Cool! And when they're tired enough to take some education, the mini museum on site here offers some interesting and interactive displays on local history. Bonus!
