Shrewsbury Market, in the town centre, is in a building many of us find ugly, but inside it’s a whole other story. It won the “Britain’s Favourite Market” award in 2018. It has a wide range of stalls, including some great street food stalls. It is closed on Sundays, Mondays and Thursdays. Most stallholders open around 9am and close around 3.30pm, but some pack up earlier, around 3.00 – especially the fruit and veg stalls.

There are three riverside restaurants at Victoria Quay, all within a 10-minute walk from the Annexe, through the Quarry Park. We are told that the Smokehouse has good food that is value for money, and they all have a nice setting. It is also where you would catch the Sabrina boat if you want to take a guided boat trip.

We particularly enjoy going to Attingham Park to stroll through the extensive grounds, but the house is also interesting to visit. They also sometimes offer bird of prey displays.

Food shopping

We love to buy our vegetables and fruit, as well as free range eggs and other goods, from Rosie’s Emporium, an eco-grocery and corner shop, also about 10 minutes’ walk away (but in the opposite direction), on Frankwell Roundabout. Check opening times (07791 2232895) – she usually closes on Monday and sometimes on Tuesday, and is open Wednesday to Sunday 10.00-5.00, but this can change. Rosie used to sell antiques but now sells fresh fruit and veg and other goods, so don’t be confused by what you may find online!

This is truly our local store, and we go there all the time. We just refer to it as "The Shop". It is two doors from the Annexe, and offers a remarkable range of goods for a local store, including fresh and dry foods, as well as cards and gifts, and a good selection of beers and wines. A recent guest made this comment: "Just two or three doors down is a lovely “corner” shop, where I dashed hoping to maybe find some eggs. Instead I found a giant basket of freshly baked croissants and great wines, beers from the local brewery and gifts and loads of foods!"

The Quarry is less than 10 minute's walk from the Annexe, and is a great for a gentle stroll or to go for a run. It also has a beautiful ornamental garden - the Dingle, with lakes and fountains. When Mike and I got married we walked through the Quarry on the way to the venue and stopped for some great shots at the Dingle.

The Wrekin is a very popular place to go walking, and it's probably best to go during the week, as it can be too busy at weekends. Its wooded slopes are quite steep and strenuous, and our dog absolutely loves it there.

We never tire of going to Copthorne Park, which is also a great favourite with our dog. It is not particularly big, but we think it is a real jewel, sensitively managed for the benefit of wildlife. It is within very easy reach - about 5 minutes away from the Annexe.

This canoe hire place is just a few minutes down the hill from the Annexe. Exploring from the river gives a whole new perspective and can be very relaxing, especially on a hot day. Recent guests said: "The canoeing was great fun, though pretty pricey - £50 half a day ( which is 3 hours ) or £25/hour. I would still recommend it as really lovely experience."
