Sightseeing

Town Hall with the Robba Fountain is a great picture spot. The fountain features the sculptures of three river gods which are believed to represent three Carniolan (historical region) rivers: Sava, Ljubljanica and Krka. The Fountain's ground plan is shaped in the form of Ljubljana's ancient three-leaf town seal. The original is housed at National Gallery. Peak into the entrance hallway of the town hall at the ground floor to see a lovely courtyard.

With the iconic pink and white Franciscan Church of the Annunciation at one end and the Triple Bridge at the other, Prešeren Square is dedicated to Slovenia’s national poet and is a must see during your visit to Ljubljana. A statue of the Slovenian poet France Prešeren is situated in the square looking to his great (unrequited) love Julija who is depicted on the house across the square in a small sculpture pretending to be looking out of a window towards Prešeren.

You can’t miss it - just next to Prešeren square "Tromostovje" or the Triple Bridge connects the pedestrian center of Ljubljana. While cars used to drive here the view is pretty different today - always teeming with people and offers great river views.

The Dragon Bridge boasts with Ljubljana's adorned dragon statues. Not just the city, but the whole country loves to incorporate these dragons (or dragon-inspired motives) into events, activities, etc.

If nothing else worth it for the views alone. On a clear day you can see all the way to the Alps. You can take either a short walk uphill to get there or go with the funicular which also boasts great views. A couple of cafes and restaurants are waiting at the top. In summer there are often events in the evenings.

City park Tivoli has lovely gardens, a pond, paved paths & grassy picnic areas. There is also a cafe (“Čolnarna”) with a lovely terrace. We like it as it gives you a bit of a respite from the city, but it is still super close to the city center.

This bridge tends to be lively with different street artists and performances. It's also a great place to take photos of the city river towards the other bridges. The bridge itself is one of the oldest bridges in Ljubljana, and dates back to at least the 13th century. It started as a wooden bridge with a butchers shop on it, but the stench from the meat was so strong that the reigning Emperor paid to have them relocated. Shoemakers were the new occupants, so the bridge gained its present name. Known in Slovenian as "Šuštarski most" or "Čevljarski most", meaning Cobblers' or Shoemakers' bridge.

The bridge is very modern so its not everyone's favourite but it does provide great view of the river and the classical-columned colonnades of the Central Market. The bridge has a central pier with glass bottom sides on either side and various modern statutes on it. This bridge is also known as the Lovers bridge, as its covered in padlocks.

Called by locals "Kongresc", it used to be a sad parking lot with a small park. Now the square is a great open space with a side of tall trees and plenty of benches, providing shade in warm summer days. It is a popular place for different city events, gatherings and concerts. It’s also the home of the Slovenian Philharmonic building and University of Ljubljana building.

Slovenian puppet theatre was founded in 1948 and provides over 500 performances annually. It upkeeps the proud Slovenian puppetry tradition. Keep an eye out for the puppets of Martin Krpan and his horse that come out of the small tower on the roof of the building on the hour. If you want to find out more about puppetry in Slovenia check the Rainy days section for info about a museum.

Another of our spots that are a short walk away to escape the city. In this spot the Ljubljanica river splits in two parts - one flowing as a channel through old part of Ljubljana. Perfect for lazy sunny afternoons. It's worth also crossing the pedestrian bridge and visit the Botanical garden.

Neighborhoods

While Ljubljana is clean and tidy, Metelkova offers an alternative side of the city. Full of interesting murals and creative street art, but can give a bit of a dodgy vibe if you are not used to it. In the evenings there are often parties organised here.

Rainy days

Ok hear me out - our modern art museums&similar aren’t as mind blowing as some other big cities like Paris or London. But we have strangely specific little museums which can bring just as much joy :)

Get to know the history of Ljubljana! It’s interactive and very children friendly while at the same time engaging for adults. Very well organized with a spotlight on the prehistoric pile-dwellers in the moors of Ljubljana.

This very small museum is located in the Ljubljana Castle. They have a section where you can try to be a puppet master, so fun for kids (and adults). Personally I find the puppets a little bit creepy but loads of people love this museum so why not give it a try!

If you have a car available this beautiful museum with a park outside of Vrhnika (about 30min drive), could be a perfect fit. It’s huge and has collections on all kinds of technical stuff (cars, wood processing, carpentry, electricity, etc). Popular with older kids and adults.

Ljubljana bus system

Ljubljana's buses are locally called "trola". You will need to buy the "Urbana" card prior to getting in! It's available at transportation ticket offices, tourist information centres and most of the city's newspaper kiosks, news-stands, gas stations and post offices. You might even be able to buy it at the cashier at some grocery shops in Ljubljana. It can also be bought from slim & tall green self-service machine called “Urbanomat” which are located at most major bus stops. The card itself then stores credit for bus fares which you need to load (in same places) prior to boarding.

What are those weird letters?

Slovenian alphabet has 3 letters that have a mark above the letters. The mark is called in Slovenian "strešica" (literally: little roof) and the letters that have it are called "šumniki". But how do you pronounce them? Simple: Č - ch as in the word chocolate or chicken Š - sh as in ship or shock Ž - ge as in courgette, or as the s in measure, pleasure

Taking a taxi

Taxi prices are quite different company to company, charges range between €0.80 and €1.50 for the starting fee and from €0.70 to €1.70 per kilometre. Charges tend to be lower if you order a taxi by phone in advance instead of hailing them from the street.
