Best part for me is the great affordable local wine starting at 1 Euro, Local market with daily Fresh Fish, Produce. I like to eat on the balcony while enjoying the view.
I get very healthy quickly here with the ocean air and great healthy food. 300 days of sunshine a year, very little rain. Expect blue skies from June to October. That s right no rain, No clouds!
Days are hot and dry, nights are cool. No AC needed as there is no humidity. At night you can dress up a little, suit jacket or sweater and during the day you can dress down tank top shorts bikini. I am always impressed by how fast clothes dry on a line in the sun....in about an hour, completely dry, try it!
When I am here I am more than happy to direct you to all the great hidden spots for lunch, dinner, drinks, dancing, golf, Sun bathing, Sunsets, Sailing excursions, Wineries, Great oceanside, Cliff top Vistas, Horseback riding on the beach at sunset, etc..... a Super place to call home base...Spain is only 100km away. Seville, Lisbon are less than 2 hours away, a great day trip. Excursions available.
I love the beaches , that everything is close by. Easy access to highways, all roads lead to Albufeira, the center of the Algarve.
Very affordable, no parking meters. The beach is just down the hill Praia dos Pescadores, (Fishermen s beach). There is a market close by with fresh local produce, fresh fish daily. Portuguese won t touch yesterday s catch, no fresh fish on Mondays. Two supermarkets, Lidl, Aldi, and small shopping center with all the services one would need. all within walking distance.
A restaurant with takeout homemade portuguese food, bread, (Adega do David),Just across the street.
Algarve Shopping is a large open air concept Mall where you can shop till 11 pm in the evening. Banks, restaurants, bars, niteclubs are plentiful.
The old town with small cobblestone streets is lively. The beach has great restaurants overlooking the ocean for an English breakfast, fresh seafood. Very affordable, a short walk down the hill.
My favourite beach hut is called appropriately enough "the spot". walk straight down to the beach and walk left past Inatel hotel, it is the next hut over. Great view, very relaxing, surrounded by a red clay cliff dotted with Umbrella pine trees and cactus plants.
If you have a car some of my favourite beaches are a short drive:
Heading west, Praia ( Beach ) Evaristo, is a small beach with an upscale restaurant and a perfect spot to catch the sunset with a bottle of Vinho Verde (Slightly Sparkling semi sweet/dry Portuguese wine).
Praia da Gale, Villa Joya boasts a restaurant with 2 Michelin Stars to reserve for dinner two weeks in advance. (phone number hidden). my favourite spot the Beach cliff top restaurant on a cliff overlooking the sea paret of Villa Joya complex and more affordable.
Pedras Amarelas restaurant/bar at Gale Beach and their full moon parties are back!
A little further west Salgodos beach boasts sand dunes and a virgin stretch of beach where nudity is permitted but not abundant, so if you see a little too much don t be surprised. Great for a run in the morning or sunset, midday if you can handle the heat.
all within 15 minute drive.
Keep heading west to praia da Marinha just west Porches a spectacular beach at the bottom of a cliff with a cool little beach hut snack bar. Jose Mourinho has a resort nearby and summers not too far away.
Benagil Beach and the famous Benagil cave just east of this beach. Four great beach restaurants, and the most affordable boat tours of the famous caves and coast.
Val de Centianes Beach two beaches over is a beautiful spot with great sunset over the water in the winter. Big cliffs are the perfect protection from wind on those windy days.A very good and affordable beach restaurant, kyak rentals and cave tours on site.
A little further west and you come to Lagos and Dona Anna beach . Hire a boat and discover hidden beaches and caves, Fantastic!
A little farther west and you hit Sagres, and Tonel beach which almost always has great surfing. Rent a board on the way into town. Visit Prince Henry the navigator s famous military sailing school where Christopher Columbus attended. Catch the sunset at the end of the world where steep cliffs dive straight into the ocean at Europe s southwestern tip and the most powerful lighthouse in Europe.
88 km away about an hour and 20 minute drive.
Praia da Oura is a small beach surrounded by restaurants, hotels night clubs and sits at the end of "The Strp" street, very touristy and fun if you are not too discerning.
One beach furthervEast is St. Eulalia Beach that also boasts the best niteclub in the Algarve "O Clube".
Next up Falesia beach. Stunning red clay cliffs with Umbrella pines at the top. a virgin stretch of beach that end s at the Villa Moura Marina. Pine cliffs hotel and golf course is a good place to access the beach by elevator. Horse back riding on the cliffs and beach 25 euros an hour, on the way to Praia dos Tomates.
Continuing west, Villa Moura an upscale planned neighbourhood, Christiano Ronaldo has a summer home there. there are no beaches but there is a marina, Casino and golf courses. Lick Disco sits at the entrance to Villa Moura an 8 000 person capacity complex that only opens in the summer. The niteclub at the casino, BlackJack, has a good ladies night every Thursday throughout the year.
A little more west Val do lobo beach. This is the Beverly Hills of Portugal and has the most expensive real estate in the country. It boasts a Jack Nicklaus designed golf course, Monte Rei, which is pricey and among the top courses in Europe.
Heading west we hit Faro and the islands. Take a boat trip to Ilha do Faro and go off the beaten path. It feels like you re somewhere completely different, lost on an island away from everyone.
30 km away
Tavira and it s famous salt production. Pick up some artisan sea salt.
keep heading East and you ll hit Seville. The most cliche Spanish town. With it s orange trees, Sevilanna ( Flamenco ), Tapas, sweet Jerez wine ( Sherry ), Bull fighting ring (the whole town watches live and on tv), Siesta, it is the hottest place in Europe, unbearable in the afternoon. 55 Degrees Celsius.... La Feria in April is well worth the visit.
200 km away
There are buses to and from Faro and Faro Airport. There is public transit from the train station and bus stations here in Albufeira. A complimentary tourist train/bus to different parts of town. There is public transport to the bus stations/ train station. Follow me tours offers tours daily to all points of interest.
Uber works well here, Taxis are affordable and everything you need is within walking distance.
I suggest renting a car and taking full insurance with no deductible as car rental companies can get picky about scratches etc., here in Portugal. Parking is not a Problem in the Algarve, no parking tickets, tow trucks, or meters. It is very affordable and I recommend portugal auto rentals. Rent a diesel car to save .20 cents a liter at the pump. Take the via verde option for automatic toll booth payments. It saves alot of headaches and time.
Fuel prices in Portugal 1.39 diesel
1.60 95 unleaded
If you are planning some long day trips you might find a diesel automobile a better option. The main highways in Portugal now have tolls on them. You might consider national highways as an alternative. All the highways are in excellent condition and it is a pleasure to drive along the coast or on winding country roads. Up into the Serra Monchique (Mountains and Hot springs), or into the Alentejo region and their world renowned wineries, or up the Vincentine Coast Nature reserve and it s virgin beaches.
Surf s up!
You can learn to surf in Sagres Tonel Beach, surf rentals and lessons on the way into town. They usually have good swells or up the Vincentine coast to Arifana beach just south of Aljizur.
