Welcome to my lovely Late Colonial era house located in Spring Hill, Brisbane. Built in the Victorian period of the 1880's it was among one of the first homes to be built in Brisbane and it has the most amazing atmosphere, which reflects her heritage. Built in a time before cars, electricity and telephones, it truly is living history.
Contemporary additions have been made which are sympathetic to the building. These include reverse cycle air-conditioning in all bedrooms, high speed Internet and CCTV security system guarding the external areas of the house. It has also undergone completely new wiring & plumbing, soundproofing and insulation of the walls and floor areas and smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, as well as fire extinguishers in every room, yet the essence of the house remains unchanged.
I have owned the house for the past 20+ years and she is affectionately known as the “Spring Hill Mansion”. If you’re looking for a unique, memorable and quintessentially Brisbane experience then look no further.
You may have seen my other listings on AirBnB for the front of the house (a 2 bedroom self contained apartment) and the complete grand house that I can rent when both sides are vacant as the hallway can be opened up between them.
This listing is for the two-storey rear of the house. When I’m not traveling for work this is my home. It’s a completely self-contained, renovated two-storey half house encompasses approximately one third the entire floor space of the house.
It consists of a large gourmet kitchen that looks onto the rear of the house, and the rear street. The kitchen is well equipped. It has 5 burner natural gas hob with wok burner, large electric - fan forced oven/grill, Microwave, Dishwasher, Coffee Maker, Toaster, Blender, Fridge/Freezer and all the cooking utensils, flatware and serving dishes to cater for 6.
When I rent out my side of the house you will find the fridge clean and empty, all perishables will be gone. I leave out coffee, tea, sugar, and long life milk in the fridge for your use. While you are here, my home is your home. The house will be available to you in perfect condition, identical to a hotel, so you can make it your home for the entire time of your stay.
The bathroom is modern and super large. It has a skylight and sky-facing window, which provide plenty of natural light as well as a surprising view of the blue sky from the bath. As you can see from the pictures it has a huge bath plus an enormous walk in rain shower. There is plenty of hot water as well so you can indulge yourself.
The laundry consists of a washing machine and clothes dryer; if you want to be kind on your clothes (and the environment) there is a clothes line out the back of the house to hang washing out, too.
On the ground level, with direct access to the kitchen, is what was the house’s parlour. This now serves as an open plan dining area with a large clerks table and chairs; the other end of the room is the lounge area in front of a Victorian fireplace. Unfortunately, the fireplace can’t be lit due to local laws and age of the house. It’s purely ornamental but it does add to the charm of the formal lounge area.
The second floor is accessed via a hand hewn wooden staircase in the corner of the lounge (the staircase is narrow) but its size belies the abundance of space to be found beyond. The second level contains the bedrooms and, as best as we know, was added mid last century to accommodate a growing family of the third owners’ of the property.
The property was built from Australian silver oak, sourced from the local mills at Petrie, and is a great example of colonial construction. The walls use VJ’s or vertical joints, also known as tongue and groove, but in this case run mostly horizontally to create the wall linings.
This style of building went on to be very common in Queenslander homes of the next century. These days, due to the cost and the availability of timber board, this type of construction has been rendered obsolete by the introduction of gyprock and panel wall sheeting. The house is in no way inferior for this, I assure you.
The second storey was built as a loft, containing two bedrooms, both featuring Dormer windows overlooking the street below, as well as large double hung windows for light and ventilation. From the windows you have views to the city, surrounding buildings, streets, green spaces and, if you’re in town at the right time views of the Jacaranda trees in full bloom, which Brisbane takes delight in each year in October.
There are box seats in the Dormer windows of both rooms and this provides an ideal and comfortable spot to watch inner city street life unfold, or, take in a relaxing sunlit read with a glass of wine, hearing the birds in the trees while you unwind.
Both bedrooms have reverse cycle air-conditioning and black out curtains for a great night’s sleep. Bedrooms also feature Queen size beds with pillow topped mattresses as well as personal TV, clock radio, charge station, reading lights, work area and storage / hanging space. Just like the food in the kitchen, when I rent out my side of the house my belongings are put away. I want you to feel like this is your place and as free to enjoy it as you would your own home.
The size of the rear house is ideal for families or groups of up to 6 (to sleep 6, 2 on Queen size airbed – available on request) who want to indulge in the charm and elegance of a bygone era. If you are looking for true luxury while visiting Brisbane it is unbelievably spacious as a home with children, too, with robust furniture in a lovely large living space.
Despite her age she has been lovingly cared for over the past century; each successive owner ensuring the building was loved, conserved and preserved. When this task fell to me, the current custodian, I followed in the same path. I trust if you stay here you will appreciate her age and splendour and treat her accordingly. She is the Grande Old Dame and your acknowledgement of her age will ensure she continues to age gracefully and providing a comfortable haven for her inhabitants for many years to come.
Lastly, you can easily turn away from 21st century accoutrements by opening the double hung windows to enjoy a tropical afternoon summer thunderstorms, then basking in the golden sunset as the sky clears. All the while imagining life in the Colony of Brisbane spanning 3 centuries since the 1880’s.

Spring Hill is the oldest suburb of Brisbane and, therefore, comes with history and character galore. You will fall in love with it. On the doorstep to the city but removed from the hustle and bustle. With Fortitude Valley or West End (fashion and food hubs of Brisbane) within 15 minutes walk and ferries, buses and trains are within 10 minutes walk. 2 supermarkets and a 24 hour convenience store are minutes walk away, too.
Within walking distance of St Andrew's Hospital and Brisbane Private Hospital plus Wickham Terrace.
You will be utterly charmed by this locale and agree that it's the best location to stay for a holiday/short term apartment in Brisbane.

I've lived in Spring Hill for 20 years so am very familiar with the area and surrounds. I have rented apartments through AirBnB when traveling and rented this space through AirBnB so am familiar with both sides of the relationship. I think that helps me be both a good landlord and renter. I am very respectful of other people's property and expect the same (and find almost all people are, thankfully). Spring Hill is a lovely area, almost genteel, but on the edge of the city so incredibly centrally located. My place has a lovely homely feel and I really enjoy meeting people from around the world so come and visit : )
