Come and stay in my beautiful Victorian townhouse, a restored relic of days gone by when life was slower and dreaming was deeper. Feel the Welsh blankets, books and bohemia wrap themselves around you in this sanctuary for women travellers.

My townhouse has three floors and guest accommodation is found on the third floor.

Named after Rhiannon, the Welsh otherworldly white horse rider (from the old, old tales of The Mabinogi), this large room's South facing window lends you a sense of the mysterious movement running through the veins of Llangollen. Wake up to expansive views of the town and valley and follow the sun's journey from Llangollen Bridge to its pink sunset farewell over the Western hills.

The bathroom on the third floor is shared between guests and my lovely living companion, Maia, who has the other bedroom on this floor. The bathroom has an array of cleaning products for your peace of mind.

You are very welcome to use the lounge, kitchen and dining room. There is a courtyard which you can access via the french windows in the dining room. It is a lovely suntrap on warm Llangollen days and deliciously balmy on moonlit Llangollen nights.

Maia and I share our space with the very gentlemanly Rusco the Cat.

Llangollen, Denbighshire, Mbretëria e Bashkuar

LLangollen is a uniquely enchanting town and many a traveller has come to visit and found themselves unable to leave!

Nestled in the Dee Valley, Llangollen is part of an area of outstanding natural beauty. The River Dee runs through the heart of the town and in old Welsh can be translated as "Water of the Goddess". People come to picnic on its exposed rocks in the summer months, or stroll along its Victorian promenade. The current bridge, which I cross to reach town from my home (and can be seen from the bedroom windows), is dated to the 16th century but is a modification of bridges centuries older than this. It is known as one of The Seven Wonders of Wales in folksong.

Overlooking the town is the mighty Dinas Brân, the now ruined 13th century castle, which is one of the surprisingly few in Wales to have been built by the Welsh. It is a site of pilgrimage for locals and visitors alike and a pair of decent shoes will see you to the top to enjoy the spectacular views in under 40 minutes from my home.

Running parallel to the river, from which it feeds, is the Llangollen Canal. Beginning at Horshoe Falls and leading to the Pontcysyllte Aquaduct, it was completed by Thomas Telford in 1805 and remains the longest aqueduct in Great Britain and the highest in the world. The canal path is a two minute walk from my home and is a peaceful cycle ride to either the falls or the aquaduct in under an hour. Or even more leisurely is a horse-drawn canal trip over the aqueduct to experience its staggering views.

Plas Newydd is a 10 minute walk from my home, crossing town and beginning the gentle ascent of the south side of the valley. It was home to the noted and radical Ladies of Llangollen who welcomed guests such as Wordsworth and Shelley in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The grounds are stunning and it is also well worth the very reasonable entry fee to the house itself.

The town is host to many festivals throughout the year, the most famous of these being the International Eisteddfod which began as a peace festival after the second world war and to this day invites performers from all over the globe to share their music and dance. For this week in early July, expect the streets to be full of bright colours, laughter, music and parades; a demonstration of what people can achieve when they come together in appreciation of diversity.

So it is probably no surprise that as this town is rich in culture, the drinking and eating establishments echo this, with everything from pizza, steak, Indian and Chinese to high-end restaurants and wine and cocktail bars. We even have our own vegan restaurant and plenty of choice for veggies. And brunch always on the cards!
