Yviers, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, Francë

Maison Shiel is situated on the outskirts of Yviers, a small village in the Poitou-Charentes region. The coastal region of Poitou-Charentes around Ile-de-Ré has a microclimate that is said to be the second sunniest region of mainland France (after Provence)

We hope that you find our home clean and comfortable and that you appreciate the tranquillity and peace of the countryside.

The naturally beautiful surroundings boast sunflower fields as far as the eye can see with countryside walks, cycle tracks through pine forests right on your doorstep (literally!)

Our home is set in one acre of land benefitting from completely private terraces for you to sunbathe and relax. We have apple, plum, fig and pear trees in the garden and plenty of grapes which can all be eaten freely when in season.

Chalais is our nearest town where you will find shops, restaurants and bars including the Intermarche, Lidl, Bakers, Butchers, Brico (DIY), Tabac / Wine shops etc.

On a Monday morning Chalais is a real nice place to be - it's market day. Here you really soak up the French atmosphere and during the summer you can hardly move as there are so many people visiting. It's not only the tourists you will find here but a lot of French people come here as well.

There are plenty more markets near Chalais……

Chalais has several bars and restaurants including the Chateau de Chalais, La Fleur, La Bonne Humeur (ask about their happy hour menu), La Bodega and La Winger and Le Perroquet Vert English tea room where you will always see a friendly face to give you advice about the area.
Tip- Intermarche supermarket is more expensive than Lidl but is much larger and has more choice. You will find a noticeboard in the entrance of the Intermarche which advertises what’s on in the local area. Be sure to have a read as there will be night markets and local music festivals throughout the year.

The 11th century Château de Chalais Tavern is a medieval themed restaurant and is in the famous castle which rises on a rocky spur, between the Tude and the Viveronne, where it dominates the city of Chalais.

Circuit de Haute Saintonge is 10km away and is a motorcycle/car race track with a bar and restaurant or you can take a picnic and watch the bikes and cars zoom by!
Ferme Chene de Greletti , Lieu Dit la Croix de Marafret, 24800, Chalais has one hour and a half donkey rides through the beautiful French countryside and woodlands. Tip- wear shoes not flip flops! Approximately 36 euros for a family of four. They have 5 donkeys and 2 ponies.

Aubeterre Sur Dronne is 11km from Maison Shiel and is a must place to visit during your stay. It is situated on the border of the “South” Charente and the Dordogne. It has exceptional cultural heritage which, combined with its beautiful natural surroundings and the famous French “art de vivre”, makes it the perfect place to live and visit.
Officially listed as one of The Most Beautiful Villages in France since 1993, it has welcomed pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostella in north west Spain, visitors and tourists for over 1000 years. Two important historical monuments add to the cultural status of Aubeterre sur Dronne; the extraordinary, monolithic, underground Church of St Jean and the Romanesque Church of St Jacques, with its stunning façade.
Visitors and tourists can enjoy meandering through the ups and downs of the narrow streets, popping in to admire the many specialist shops, including a leather worker and potters, and then settling down in the village square, Place Trarieux, at one of the cafés or restaurants, comfortably shaded by ancient lime trees. At the foot of the village, the meadows meet the River Dronne. There is a river beach and restaurant, a Canoeing Centre, and a football club and tennis club. The Hotel de Ville in the square offers a fantastic quality 3 course lunch for approximately 15 euros and there are plenty of other restaurant and crepe houses. Look out for the live bands which play on weekends in the summer months in the square.

Grande Etang de la Jemaye is 30 minutes’ drive from Maison Shiel in Echourgnac. It is characterised by its woodland and stretches of water and is one of the gems of a magnificent ancient forest. The site is composed of a vast forest and six interconnected ponds. Used for swimming and watersports since the 70s.

Saint-Aulaye is a small bastide town and was built in 1288 by Pierre de Bremond.
The Romanesque church of Saint Aulaye is a pleasant stroll out to the edge of town. Narrow streets meander down towards the 11th century church.
From the church, you get very good views of the Renaissance chateau of Saint Aulaye. From here it looks a bit like one of the Loire valley chateaux! Most unexpected in this little village. The chateau is now the town hall and dates to the thirteenth century.
The village is also known for its rare 11th century bridge spanning the river Dronne. There is a river beach in the town - a very popular spot in the summer. The beach has water slides that are open during July and August from 3pm until 6pm.
Also, the museum of cognac and wine in the village - the (Musee du Cognac et du Vin) is something that should not be missed. ‘Vival’, in Aubeterre).

Market day in Saint-Aulaye is a Saturday morning making this a particularly good time to go - see Saint-Aulaye at its most colourful and stock up on the deliciously tasty local fruit and vegetables at the same time. Saint Aulaye also has a nice sandy beach on the banks of the river Dronne. Various activities for children are set up on the beach and a life-guard surveys the beach in the summer. There is a picnic area, bar and restaurant

Brantome is 60km from Maison Shiel but well worth the journey. It is an attractive town near the northern edge of the Dordogne department, sometimes known as the Venice of the Dordogne - the town has a nice mix of medieval and renaissance architecture to admire. It’s also worth driving up to Angoulême to see its charming old town, and beyond it to Cognac, where you can also visit some of the Cognac producers.

Cognac is a maze of narrow, cobblestone streets framed by beautiful 17th-18th century houses built by cognac merchants of the period. On the docks of the river Charente sits the castle where Francois I of France was born. You can visit some of the famous cognac houses such as Hennessy, Martel and Camus as part of a guided visit lasting about an hour in the town of Cognac.
Perigueux is also a beautiful ancient Roman city, with over 39 listed buildings and a charming little ‘old town’ studded with restaurants. The place is also quite lively at night, especially in the summer, with lots of open-air festivals and concerts.

Angoulême is quite a big city, but its prettiest part is the old medieval town high up on the hill with spectacular views of the area. You can park up near the Mairie (Mayor’s office) and then walk over to the old town, with its cobblestone streets and charming shops and cafes, or you can catch the direct train from Chalais.

La Rochelle City and Port is an amazing location on the coast. It is located on the Bay of Biscay. La Rochelle’s history mostly involved the sea; today it has a large pleasure-boat marina thus its heart is the picturesque "Vieux Port" ("Old Harbour"). The city retains a rich architectural heritage, and has an aquarium, attractive gardens and a natural-history museum. Book early for summer; mid-July features Francofolies, a huge French music festival.

Jonzac (47km) is best known for being a spa town, and although the spa waters were first discovered only 30 years ago, several thousand visitors a year now visit to receive the therapeutic benefits of the water from the thermal springs.
More recently a substantial water-based leisure complex has also been opened at Jonzac, known as the 'Antilles de Jonzac' and featuring a lagoon, indoor beach, waterfalls etc.
The most notable building in the town is the Chateau de Jonzac. The chateau was built in the 15th century on the site of an earlier castle that had been destroyed during the Hundred Years War. Extensive changes were made during the 19th century, part of the original castle demolished, and the moat filled in, but significant parts of the medieval castle remain including the two main round towers and several other interesting architectural details.
Still in active use, the chateau now houses the town hall and also an archaeology museum (in the cloisters).

Bordeaux City is a wonderful city and less than an hour’s drive away too. Chalais has a train station taking you direct to the city in 50 minutes.

Bordeaux has the Miroir d'Eau is the world's largest reflecting pool. Covering an area of 3450 square metres of black granite on the quayside opposite the imposing Palais de la Bourse, the 'water mirror' provides hours of entertainment on warm sunny days when the reflections in its thin slick of water – drained and refilled every half-hour –- are stunning. Every 23 minutes a dense fog-like vapor is ejected for three minutes to add to the fun (and photo opportunities. There are fabulous bars and restaurants here including Gordon Ramsay’s famous 2 Michellin-starred Le Pressoir d’Argent which is in the first floor of the InterContinental Bordeaux Le Grand Hotel

Oradour Sur Glane is an historic town known as the 1944 Village and has free access to the memorial village. It’s well worth a visit but as its 94km away it is best to visit either on the way down or your journey home.
Poiters (160km) is a beautiful city with a fantastic theme park Futurescope
Royan and Steorge (94km) lovely coastal holiday towns.

Moulin de Poltrot, 16390 Nabinaud - A great day out for the kids -20 minutes away. Take a picnic and sit by the lake.
Maison Shiel is situated on the outskirts of Yviers, a small village in the Poitou-Charentes region. The coastal region of Poitou-Charentes around Ile-de-Ré has a microclimate that is said to be the second sun…
