The Coast Houses, in Danish "Kysthusene", were built in 1985 by the organisation Dansk Folkeferie (Danish Peoples' Holiday), which had been given the task to create and build houses with a good location suitable for holiday. The houses were owned by Dansk Folkeferie until 2007, when they were put up for sale. They are now owned by individual private persons.

The houses are drawn by the architect Stephan Koppel, whose wish it was with the lyme grass colored timber of the houses to create an impression of a Danish village of timbered houses.

Gilleleje was originally a fisherman's town which has then gone through quite a development. In 2017 it won the title of Denmark's most creative town. This is mainly due to the fact that the town is experienced as a place where you feel both good and also welcome. In addition, the town has received much recognition for its good balance between culture and commercial life.

The town has been able to keep a lot if its original small, idyllic streets and thatched houses. It has many good boutiques and shops with clothing and handicraft, and the town has several good restaurants and cafés. During summertime there is a lively atmosphere in the harbor area, which is the natural core of the town. Gilleleje is the biggest fishing town Zealand.

Lately, the newly built "Kulturhavn Gilleleje", Culture Harbor of Gilleleje, has become a very popular place attracting a lot of visitors from near and far. The Culture Harbor, which is an architectural masterpiece, has a certain ambiance and pulse to it through its interaction between light and heavy as well as light and dark. The place has a lot of offerings within many fields: music, food, debates, art, film, books. You name it - The Culture Harbor of Gilleleje has it.

LIFE BEGINS AT THE END OF YOUR COMFORT ZONE!

Having said that, I still realize of course that we probably all need a certain level of stability in our lives to enjoy new places. But to change the scene and go somewhere that takes us beyond our comfort zone, taste new food, speak with someone from a different place, with a different view on things and life are often both inspiring and educational.

Or as the great writer Hans Christian Andersen simply put it:
At rejse er at leve (To travel is to live). He had a good point there.

I hope you will experience something that comes close to this view on life while staying in one of my vacation houses. At least I can promise you that I will do my utmost to make your stay as pleasant and memorable as possible and look forward to welcoming you to my house on either the beautiful island of Bornholm or the “hyggelige” harbor town at Gilleleje!
