Set in its own tropical garden, and sharing the amenities of a small and friendly eco-lodge (Footsteps), this very unusual house provides a comfortable and relaxing retreat. It is only a half hour stroll to deserted beaches and a mile from Gunjur village and its colourful market. It can be rented on its own (up to 2 couples) or together with Kaira Bungo Roundhouse (3 couples). Special rates apply for this arrangement.

Although it is only an hour from Banjul airport, this wood and thatch house feels a million miles from the hectic bustle of the Gambian tourist strip. You fall asleep to the background sounds of the ocean and wake to a strange dawn chorus of tropical birds. All our services are ecological - a bore hole for water, solar power for electricity and hot water, and a non-flush, self-composting toilet. The house is tall and airy with mesh windows and external shutters. A shady verandah runs the length of the house and close by is a separate shaded seating area ('bantaba') with sun-loungers and hammock. The house is fully self catering with kitchen area, fridge and and 3-ring gas hob but meals and refreshments are also available at the excellent eco-lodge restaurant a hundred paces away. For transport you can choose between bush taxi and car and driver - the latter is easily arranged on an ad hoc daily basis and is preferable to car hire. We also provide two bikes for the use of guests, ideal for short trips on the sandy tracks. The house is secluded and private but services (daily cleaning and 24 hour security) are provided by Footsteps Eco-lodge and its friendly and helpful staff.
LAYOUT: there is a large open plan living area with kitchen at one end and comfortable seating at the other. Leading off, there are two double bedrooms with king size beds and a bathroom with gravity shower (hot and cold), wash basin and self-composting toilet.
Power supply is solar and runs off batteries. This is sufficient for lighting, fans, and for charging mobile phones, laptops etc., but it will not support power-hungry appliances such as hair-dryers, electric shavers etc. and economy of use is needed on cloudy days.

We love: being off the beaten track yet with all amenities at hand; the proximity of the ocean (walking and swimming); the walks through the forest; the amazing sunsets; the friendly people; the vibrancy and colour of African life; the evening gin and tonic on the verandah.
If you want to be active: swimming; walking; birdwatching; fishing from the beach; boat trips to Senegal; handling pythons at the 'reptile farm'; drumming, cooking and batik lessons; guided nature walks; visiting markets and craft centres; cultural visits (eg. school and hospital visits, naming ceremonies).

I am a practicing psychoanalyst and retired psychiatrist and write about psychoanalysis and the arts. My wife and I have two houses, one in Tuscany, Italy, and another in the Gambia. We chose the Italian house because of its location - the incredible views, the comfortable isolation and the friendliness of the local people. When we first saw it, the house was half ruined and hidden in undergrowth, but we always knew it would be alright and we've turned it around and given it a new kind of life. The garden has been a special delight and we've slowly helped it to realise its potential. Everything is changed, of course, from the old smallholding with a well in the middle of what is now the dining room floor, and a place for the animals in what is now our 'utility room', but nevertheless we've tried to create a structure in harmony with its surroundings in which everything is made from the stone in the mountain and the wood of the local chestnut trees. If you appreciate these thoughts, we think you'll enjoy your stay. If you're looking for the bright lights, you'll be disappointed because here there are only the fireflies.

We chose the Gambian house for somewhat similar reasons but the initial impulse to go to the Gambia was the proximity of winter sunshine - only a 6 hour flight from the UK. However, we quickly fell in love with the warm and friendly Gambians and after several years have become quite involved with the local community. You cannot go to the Gambia and not be touched by the resilience and friendliness of the people in the face of unrelenting poverty and inevitably it makes you want to help. It is easy, however, to get scammed, and if you want to help, it is generally safer through a project that is up and running. We made several false starts but now have a small charity which has built and runs a nursery school in nearby Sambuyang village. The charity is Gambian registered - Kenali community Schools Trust - and the school with 60children of 4 to 7 is called Kenali Community Nursery School. If you would like to visit, our manager in The Gambia, Omar Touray, will arrange to take you there.

We are not present ourselves but all our guests will be met by our manager, Omar Touray, soon after arrival. He will show you around and is always available to help with any problems. In addition, our guests are treated as though they are guests of the eco-lodge and have the same access to facilities and staff. Guests are met at the airport by arrangement (£25 each way per party of 4).

NURSERY SCHOOL: Please note that for the past few years we have run a small charity, Kenali Community Schools Trust, which has built and runs a nursery school (60 children) in Sambouyang, a neighbouring village. If you would like to arrange a visit, Omar will be very happy to take you there.
