Welcome to Bala and the lakes, mountains and scenery of beautiful Snowdonia, home to a host of World Heritage sites and visitor attractions.
At The Old Workhouse - a Grade 11* listed building - we serve a modern Welsh-influenced breakfast to set you up for the day ahead. The night before we provide you with a breakfast tick menu, from which you can choose what you want, and the time you want it. It is served in the kitchen at the time specified. The kitchen is large and spacious.

The Poet's Room is very spacious and perfect for couples, or just friends, to come and enjoy the beautiful countryside, with a comfortable stay in a historic setting.
We are located within Bala town and all it's facilities, and just five minutes stroll to Llyn Tegid, the largest natural lake in Wales - perfect for kayaking or paddle boarding. There are lots of beautiful local walks from the workhouse door, and the coast is an scenic 45-minute drive away.
We are close to the national White Water Rafting Centre and lots of other outdoor activities such as zip-wires, Surf Snowdonia, cycling routes etc...
National Trust Gardens, castles and stately homes are also in abundance in Snowdonia.

Bala is a thriving market town with a good choice of pubs, restaurants and cafes, as well as many artisan businesses, all within a short stroll from the workhouse.
The town sits at the end of Lake Bala (Llyn Tegid), the largest natural lake in Wales and one of the most beautiful settings anywhere.

Hi, I'm Ian - ex-journalist, sometime author, and lately the owner of a former workhouse along with life partner Georgina.
I worked as a reporter in Aberdeen, London and Manchester until a large redundancy cheque was waved in front of me in 2001.
Since then, with Georgina, I've opened and closed a hotel, run a restaurant, been involved in property, and spent most of our savings (such as they were) on bringing part of the old workhouse back to life.
Though former city dwellers, we moved here recently after visiting frequently and falling for its charms.
We love good food and wine, enjoy the company of others, and look forward to making your stay as enjoyable as possible.
