The Ruru Upstairs Bedroom on the North-West corner of the house is a large room that has access to a north-facing balcony an a close-by bathroom. The room is named after the Ruru, a New Zealand owl, also known as the "morepork" because of the sound of its call that you may hear at night. This room is good for couples, solo adventurers, business travelers and those studying or working remotely. Breakfast is complimentary. Dinner can be arranged separately with sufficient advance notice.

- Short walks from the house provide some great views of Young Nick's Head known as the first land in NZ sighted by Captain Cook's ship in 1769 - Early morning views of "first" sunrises both from the house and the hill above the house are also an attraction.

- Bushmere Estate, Hexton is 13 minutes (15 km away)
- Wrights Vineyard & Winery and Milton's (organic) Vineyard are 5 minutes drive (5.5 km) from the house (north along SH2).

- Cultural attractions in Gisborne include the Tairawhiti Museum, 10 Stout Street, Gisborne 4010, which is 23 minutes drive from Pakowhai, the Dome Theater
