    Hi everyone,

I’m Catherine, Airbnb’s Global Head of Hosting, and I’m back with another Host Update. If you’d like to catch up on previous updates, you can find them here.

Today, I’m thrilled to introduce you to the members of our new Host Advisory Board. As we’ve worked to rebuild our business around hosts, we’ve chosen to put our partnership with hosts at the center.

Our Host Advisory Board was designed to give voices to hosts as we build the future of our community. With 17 members hailing from 14 countries and five continents, we selected a group of diverse, committed, exceptional hosts who will relay the interests of the global host community in Airbnb planning and decision-making in 2021.

In the video above, you’ll meet our board members and get a sense of their passions and personalities after an intro from me. You can also head here to learn more about the Host Advisory Board and read short bios of each board member.

How did you select the Host Advisory Board?
A diverse group of hosts was selected from the Community Leaders Program, who are active in our Community Center and have made significant community contributions.

A select group of host advocates within the company—including all three of our founders, members of our Community Team, and me—chose our inaugural board members. We had the pleasure of reviewing hundreds of host profiles from all over the world, focused on diverse representation, including geography, race, ethnicity, gender, and listing type.

Can you tell me more about the criteria for selecting members for the board?
We selected our first 17 board members based on four key qualifications:

    • They’re passionate about hosting and their community. Hosting is a part of who they are and how they live their lives.
    • They’ve made significant contributions to the hosting community. These are leaders who convene and run local hosting groups, mentor new hosts, or advocate for hosts in their local communities.
    • They provide exceptional guest experiences. Together, these members of our community have hosted more than 15,000 guests with a combined total of 86 years of hosting experience and an average star rating of 4.9. For these hosts, prioritizing guests and creating memorable stays have become second nature.
    • They’ve shown they have a strong desire to create a better future for all hosts. These hosts truly understand the value of a strong hosting community. They’re motivated by more than just their individual success, but also the success of the community collectively.

What does the Host Advisory Board have the ability to influence?
The Host Advisory Board will help influence community policies and new programs, as well as new features and tools to help hosts succeed. They’ll also play a role in helping to inform how the Airbnb Host Endowment is invested in the community.

The board will meet monthly with Airbnb executives to represent the host community's voice and make sure that hosts’ ideas are heard.

What can I expect to hear from the Host Advisory Board, and where can I go for updates?
The Host Advisory Board will convene at least once a month beginning in January 2021. Members will provide updates after each meeting on key themes and topics to ensure the host community stays informed about progress and decisions.

You can expect monthly updates in the Host Newsletter, as well as regular opportunities for feedback and discussion on the Community Center. Be sure to sign up for our Host Newsletter if you haven’t already, by opting in to receive email under Promotions and tips.

How long will Host Advisory Board members serve?
These 17 hosts will serve on the Host Advisory Board for one year. We’re already having great conversations about the selection process for next year and beyond, and we welcome your feedback.

How can I share my ideas with the Host Advisory Board?
The Host Advisory Board is actively working to determine the best method for the host community to share their ideas and feedback.

In the meantime, as we formalize this process, you can join in the conversation on the Community Center, where our new board members will join me and our Community Managers to respond to host questions and address important topics. Please keep writing and posting, and you can always tag me directly: @Catherine-Powell.
