Hike up Edinburgh’s city mountain - 822ft (251m) Arthur’s Seat - for outstanding views, friendly chat, and a snack and a drink, with enthusiastic hillwalker & local, Paul. For your safety, group size is limited to just 4 guests.
Meet by St Giles Cathedral. We'll walk through the southeast corner of the Old Town and I'll tell you a little about the Royal Mile, the South Bridge and the City Walls. Once in Holyrood Park we'll hike 1 mile (1.6km) to the summit on a clear but gravelly path, and up steps cut into the hill - 500ft (150m) of steep ascent. We’ll stop at beautiful viewpoints. I'll share with you the human stories connected to this extinct volcano, its plants and wildlife, and its connections to local history and culture.
Up top we’ll enjoy a locally-sourced energy bar and water, not to mention dramatic 360º views of city, estuary, and hills near and far. On our descent, we’ll explore a romantic, ruined, clifftop chapel and a quaint loch. Re-entering the Old Town from the east, we'll walk up the Canongate and through the Netherbow, each with their own stories to relate, and we'll discover a fragment of the 15th century city walls, before finishing at our start point.
You'll need a good level of fitness; firm footwear (walking shoes or boots) with good tread; waterproof jacket. It can be windy at the top, so bring an extra layer. Total distance walked: 4 miles (6km).
Other things to note
We walk over 4 miles total. 1 mile of this is steep ascent. 1.5 miles are a more gradual walk down. The remaining distance walked is along Old Town streets, mainly gradual gradient. 3 hours allows us to take things leisurely. Times may vary slightly depending on group's speed.

I've been lucky enough to live in Edinburgh for over 3 decades and I love this most unusual of towns. I'm an experienced hillwalker, a professional tour guide, with a degree in literature and language, and a diploma in music. I've worked for many years in tourism, organising and leading tours all over Scotland. I've been going up and down the more modest hills of the British Isles for over 40 years and I'd love to have the chance to share my enthusiasm for Edinburgh's landscape and culture with you on this wonderful walk.
Ku do të jesh
We pass under the 19th century South Bridge and learn about its unusual design.
In the area known as the Pleasance we see the 16th Century Flodden Wall.
We climb extinct volcano, Arthur's Seat, via the steep zigzag, stopping for photos. We enjoy a snack at the summit, and come down via The Dasses to the medieval ruins of a chapel. We also stop at a small lake.
We walk along the Royal Mile, seeing the facades of historic buildings and walls.

The view from Arthur’s Seat is the only incentive you need to climb this massive hill. I had a great experience on this walking tour as it was filled with a good understanding of the history behind these great views. Paul was knowledgeable, friendly and patient as I was not the best at walking. He gave us some great recommendations of places to eat and visit and it was just all round a great day. Would recommend!
